What a painting! It says so much.
Here we see Whistler as a young English gentleman, seemingly at home on leave from military duty.
He is relaxed. His accoutrements sit on a chair, and he is enjoying a quiet drink.

But, there is also a sense of discomfort about it all. His one hand is hidden, as if there is another undisclosed side to his life, and half his face is hidden in shadow.

I like how he has included his paint brushes, foremost on the rail, in his painting.

A sensitive, finely developed work.
